Director of Public Works / Engineering & Utilities
The City of Peshtigo, Wisconsin is seeking a qualified and experienced professional to serve as its next Director of Public Works / Engineering & Utilities.
This full-time, salaried leadership position is responsible for the overall direction and coordination of the City’s public works and utility operations, including streets, stormwater, water distribution, sanitary sewer collection, wastewater treatment oversight, fleet and equipment, municipal infrastructure, and related regulatory and compliance responsibilities.
The Director also serves as the City’s engineering lead and project manager for infrastructure and capital improvement projects, coordinating with consulting engineers, contractors, developers, utilities, regulatory agencies, City staff, committees, and elected officials.
The City is especially interested in candidates with a strong engineering background. A Wisconsin Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred, but not required.
Key Responsibilities
The Director of Public Works / Engineering & Utilities will be responsible for:
- Planning, directing, and coordinating Public Works and assigned utility operations
- Supervising and supporting Public Works employees and assigned utility staff
- Overseeing streets, sidewalks, stormwater systems, snow and ice control, and other municipal infrastructure
- Coordinating water distribution, sanitary sewer collection, and wastewater treatment operations
- Managing municipal fleet, equipment, and garage operations
- Planning and coordinating capital improvement and infrastructure projects
- Working with consulting engineers, contractors, developers, utilities, and regulatory agencies
- Coordinating project planning, permitting, bidding, construction administration, inspection, and project closeout
- Reviewing development and subdivision proposals for infrastructure, stormwater, right-of-way, and utility impacts
- Assisting with long-term infrastructure and capital improvement planning
- Managing municipal permitting and right-of-way coordination
- Supporting regulatory and environmental compliance related to public works and utility operations
- Preparing and presenting technical information and recommendations to City committees and the Common Council
- Communicating clearly and professionally with residents, employees, elected officials, consultants, contractors, and other stakeholders
Qualifications
The City is seeking a collaborative, hands-on leader who is comfortable working in both operational and administrative environments.
Successful candidates should demonstrate strong leadership, project-management, organizational, and communication skills, as well as the ability to understand technical information and explain complex issues clearly to individuals without an engineering or public works background.
Preferred qualifications include:
- Professional experience in municipal public works, civil engineering, utilities, construction management, or a closely related field
- Demonstrated supervisory and personnel-management experience
- Experience managing infrastructure projects, contractors, budgets, and capital improvements
- Knowledge of municipal streets, water, sewer, stormwater, wastewater, and related infrastructure
- Experience with project planning, construction administration, permitting, bidding, and regulatory coordination
- Ability to read and interpret engineering plans, specifications, ordinances, construction documents, and technical requirements
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, construction management, public administration, or a related field preferred
- Wisconsin Professional Engineer (PE) licensure preferred, but not required
- Municipal engineering and/or municipal government experience highly desirable
An equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant professional experience will be considered.
Candidates with substantial experience in public works leadership, municipal infrastructure, utilities, civil engineering, construction, or project management are encouraged to apply even if they do not meet every preferred qualification.
Position Information
This is a full-time, salaried/exempt position reporting to the Mayor.
The position includes on-call and emergency-response responsibilities related to weather events, utility outages, infrastructure failures, and other municipal needs. Attendance at evening committee and Common Council meetings may also be required.
The successful candidate will be expected to effectively manage current operations while helping the City plan for future infrastructure needs, prioritize capital investments, strengthen systems and procedures, develop staff, and guide projects from planning through completion.
Compensation & Benefits
Salary range: $85,000–$95,000 annually, depending on qualifications and experience (DOQ).
Compensation may be negotiable based on the qualifications, experience, and professional credentials of the successful candidate.
